What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is the first step in identifying and diagnosing mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorders. They can be performed on children, adolescents, and adults.  The assessment typically lasts between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on the person. In some cases, the evaluation may require multiple visits.

To get a better understanding of the patient, the psychologists might ask questions about:

  • The patient's personal history, including any traumatic or stressful events
  • Abnormal or dysfunctional behaviors, emotions, or thoughts that the patient experiences
  • The effects that the disruptive behaviors or thinking patterns have had on the patient’s schooling, job performance, relationships, and daily activities
  • A timeline of when symptoms first appeared, the frequency in which they occur, and any social or environmental factors that seem to trigger the symptoms
  • The patient’s medical history (including past or current drug prescriptions)
  • The patient’s family history of mental health or behavioral disorders

For patients exhibiting physical symptoms, the psychologist may order lab work or X-rays.

In some circumstances, patients are asked to complete self-evaluations. These questionnaires allow mental health experts to gauge the level of self-awareness the patient has as well as how the patient processes information. Most importantly, it’s essential to recognize that psychiatric assessments are not standardized. They are customized for each individual.

Our team utilizes a variety of mental health assessment tools when performing psychiatric assessments. Not two evaluations are the same because no two patients are the same. Customized evaluations lead to a more effective diagnosis and treatment.

How to Prepare for a Psychiatric Assessment

The best way to prepare for a mental health evaluation is to recognize abnormal thoughts, feelings, or behaviors before you meet with a psychologist.

In the days leading up to your assessment, consider:

  • Disruptive or abnormal thoughts, feelings, or behaviors
  • What might be triggering your symptoms
  • Times and places where symptoms most often occur
  • Duration and frequency of symptoms

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, write down information about your symptoms in a journal and bring it along to your psychiatric assessment. Jot down the time of day when symptoms occur, how they make you feel, and any other important notes you think a psychologist should know.

Benefits of a Mental Health Evaluation

There are three reasons to perform a comprehensive psychological assessment:

  • To identify abnormal behaviors, emotions, and thinking patterns
  • To diagnose a mental, emotional, development, or behavioral disorder
  • To determine a treatment that best suits the patient

Without a proper evaluation, patients may not receive an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Avoiding a psychiatric assessment delays treatment and prevents a patient from living a healthy lifestyle.  Psychiatric assessments lead to treatments. Without treatment, symptoms get worse. They may develop into aggressive thoughts or harmful behaviors that put the patient in danger.
